I set out to study teaching after matric, but soon discovered a passion for both Psychology and Biblical studies, which led to an Honours in Psychology. After a few years in teaching (here and overseas) and in small business, those passions were stirred again through my involvement with Living Waters ministries and Theophostic Ministries.
In 2005 I started working as a lay Christian counsellor from an office rented within the Little Falls Psychology practice, while running the distribution of Theophostic training materials for a short season. I completed a post-graduate degree, the B. Psych (with a focus on trauma) Cum Laude, through the Institute of Christian Psychology. This was followed by an internship, which allowed me to register as Registered Psychological Counsellor through the HPCSA.
This differs from psychologists who have a further Masters degree in one of the sub-fields of Psychology. Thus a clinical psychologist will do long-term work with severe disorders / pathology, an educational psychologist will work with developmental and other issues related to education, etc.
Since then, I have completed a Masters in Pastoral counselling (Cum Laude, through NWU) together with an Honours in Biblical Studies (Cum Laude, through Unisa), and am also registered with the South African Association of Pastoral Counsellors as specialist counsellor.
From 2012 I will be busy with a Phd in Gestalt Play Therapy (through NWU) that will cover a wide range of skills – including work with adults!
